Our VisionEducating tomorrow’s strong Christian leaders in our classrooms today.
The Education Committee and Board of Timothy Christian School hire caring staff who are professing Christians. Our staff are dedicated professionals committed to ensuring that all children feel safe and accepted; ready to achieve their fullest potential. The teaching qualifications of our instructors equal or exceed the Ministry of Education’s expectations.
Frequent and direct contact between parents and teachers at TCS is strongly encouraged. Our teachers are readily available to meet with parents to discuss their children(s) needs and expectations. Early bird interviews are held in the first few weeks of October with regular parent-teacher interviews scheduled approximately a week after report cards are issued in November. Interviews can be arranged at other times of the year as deemed necessary.
We have a lovely playground that lends itself to all kinds of imaginative activities for younger children while still leaving room for sports. The staff is always concerned that recesses be fun, that they be safe, and reinforce the positive character traits which we encourage throughout the school. Our recess times are intended for fresh-air activities. Students are expected to be outside, except when there is inclement weather. The principal decides whether an indoor recess is warranted. If parents wish a child to remain indoors, they must send a note to school. We ask that this be done sparingly. These items are not permitted on school property: cell phones, iPods, MP3 players, computer games, toy guns, water pistols, knives, or matches. Students may bring their own toys or sports equipment, provided they mark them with their names and take responsibility for their safe keeping. This privilege may be curtailed if it seems to be contributing to selfish or anti-social behaviour. During all recess times, a teacher will be on duty in the playground. The duty supervisor has full authority to apply playground rules according to their best judgement.
Students bring their lunches and eat them in their own classrooms. We are happy when we see lunches that are consistent with the theme of ecological responsibility that we talk about a lot at school. Perhaps you could keep this in mind as you shop -watch out for all that unnecessary packaging. A hot lunch program will run every Friday with the funds going towards the grade 7-8 Ottawa and Fair Glen trips. We also offer a milk card program.
All-school devotions occur every other Wednesday afternoon, with special all-school devotions for holidays such as Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter. There is singing and presentations of weekly awards. The format of ASD varies from a guest speaker, a Bible story or talk by one of our teachers, a dramatic or musical presentation by one of our classes, and sometimes just a bit of fun. Parents are always invited.
The school population is divided into teams and older students and younger students are paired up for Book-buddies which meet each Friday to read together. Team Events and Spirit Days occur about once per month.
Each class has one library period each week. During this time students can browse through the library and choose books to sign out for the week. The library committee is available to the students during this time as well. Books are signed out for a period of two weeks after which time they must be returned to the library.
The Accelerated Reading Program was purchased by Timothy to help students gain confidence in reading comprehension. Individual classes use this program in different ways. Some classes expect students to read enough ARP books to earn a specific number of ‘points’. Points are assigned to ARP books by the program based on a number of factors, including the book’s reading level and the student’s ability to answer the 10 recall questions. ARP books are labeled in the library. The librarians are constantly evaluating new books to be added to the Accelerated Reading Program.
TCS participates in many sports as part of the Toronto North Schools District. We are also included in many of the local sports event with the Bruce-Grey Catholic School Districts. TCS has an “everyone plays” ports policy. Any child interested in being on a particular team will get the chance to do so. On some occasions try-outs will be help for teams that are limited in players. Recess Intramural sports run all year long and all TCS students are encouraged to participate. The teams are made up of mixed grades and genders with other students cheering their classmates on during games. Our students participate in the following sports tournaments and events: soccer, cross-country running, volleyball, basketball, badminton, and track and field. Swimming lessons are offered each spring through the local YMCA for our younger grades. We also run a winter elective program during a 3-4 week time period in the winter in which students are able to participate in a variety of local sports activities.
TCS is very proud of their excellent Music and Drama program. Music appreciation is an integral part of the curriculum, from the simple enjoyment of singing traditional songs in the primary grades to the study of musical styles and composers in the junior and senior classes. Our students are also instructed in instrumental music through the playing of alto and soprano recorder, chimes and other instruments. Each year under the direction of our certified music teacher, Mrs. Joyce McConnell, the students of TCS present a full musical at Christmas in the Spring. Al students participate in the musicals by acting, dancing, sounds and lights, props and stage hands or singing in the choir. Students are able to showcase their talents during one of our “Afternoon Live” productions where students are invited to perform for their classmates talents ranging from singing, dancing, instrumentals, poetry and other talents. TCS actively participates in each in the Grey County Kiwanis Festival of Music and have received many awards for the vocal and instrumental ensembles.
